-And much, much more...

And now, a word from author Ben Greenfield:

"You, as an endurance athlete, need to eat massive quantities of food, which is why I wrote this book (OK, I also wrote it for you coaches who really want to help your athletes optimize their daily nutrition habits for peak performance).

As a matter of fact, compared to an average person, during your training for ultra-endurance events such as Ironman triathlon, you will burn through an extra 1500-3000 calories per day. And with this extreme amount of energy utilization, most triathletes don and rsquo;t feel the need to bother with dieting or weight maintenance. Heck, some of us do this sport so we can eat as much as we want!

Unfortunately many endurance athletes use the rigor of training and a speedy metabolism to justify a diet that is incredibly calorie dense (as it should be), but is also high in foods that can cause damage to human performance, the immune system, the heart, the hormones and overall health. Even though you may think that as long as your and ldquo;furnace is burning hot enough and rdquo; you can fuel it with whatever you and rsquo;d like, this is simply not the case. The combustible byproducts actually matter!

For example, common traditional foods for fueling endurance sports include high carbohydrate sources such as orange juice, bagels, cereal, crackers, bread, pasta, scones and fruit smoothies. With the advent of commercialized sports nutrition, the dietary staples of an Ironman triathlete now include sports bars and cookies, gels, powders, gummy chews and specially formulated and ldquo;energy and rdquo; drinks.

But a diet high in these type of refined carbohydrates and and ldquo;fabricated and rdquo; foods can cause excessive levels of glucose in the bloodstream, a condition known as hyperglycemia. During exercise, the excess glucose is used for energy. But most triathletes continue to consume these type of high-carbohydrate foods, even outside training.

Several studies have demonstrated a link between hyperglycemia and production of free radicals by immune cells. These free radicals can not only cause inflammation, but also increase potential for insulin resistance, damage the immune system, and reduce exercise recovery. In addition, as you will find in this book, an enormous number of chronic diseases have been linked with hyperglycemia.

When this diet-based inflammation is combined with muscle tissue inflammation from repetitive motion training such as hundred mile bike rides and twenty mile runs, the body is constantly barraged with damaging free radicals. As a result of chronic inflammation, an athlete may experience constant fatigue, sore joints, disrupted sleep patterns, and frequent sickness. New studies on plaque formation in the coronary arteries has even suggested that refined sugars may play a larger role than saturated fat in dangerous LDL cholesterol production.

In this book, you and rsquo;ll learn all about the nitty-gritty details of hyperglycemia, as well as exactly what type of foods you can eat to both control inflammation and reduce your risk for sending your blood sugar levels on a roller-coaster ride. You and rsquo;ll also learn important timing techniques to enhance your sensitivity to insulin, a very important hormone involved with sugar utilization.

But your concern as an Ironman triathlete does not stop with refined sugar consumption. For example, an extremely high daily calorie intake also increases the likelihood of consuming large amounts of common food allergens such as dairy, wheat, whey, soy and eggs. As a result, many triathletes experience bloating, gas, constipation, skin problems and increased susceptibility to colds and flu.

These immune system difficulties are often chalked up to "hard training". However, even when the high volume of training finally does subside, many of these problems can continue to cause a triathlete to experience poor health and gain significant amounts of fat (leading to the ever-growing population of overweight or sick ex-Ironman athletes).

So while an Ironman triathlete may appear to be slim and fit, there are often complex, diet-related health issues that go far beyond physical appearance. Maybe you and rsquo;ve experienced this phenomenon.

You look at your body in the mirror. Perhaps your body looks fit and trim on the outside (although most endurance athletes have that small pouch on inflammatory-based fat on the hips or abdominals). But inside, you and rsquo;ve experienced extreme fatigue in the afternoons, mind and ldquo;fuzziness and rdquo;, aches and pains that are constantly barraging one joint or another, mood swings, stale legs during a workout, frequent and ldquo;hitting the wall and rdquo; during races, and constant colds, flus, and immune system breakdowns.

It is very important to understand that with an exercise regimen that is already very difficult for the average human body to absorb, you as a triathlete must adopt a nutrition protocol that supports complete health, and not just and ldquo;gasoline fuel and rdquo; for exercise.

The solution that is presented in this book involves a diet that focuses on fighting inflammation and controlling refined sugar consumption, insulin levels and potential food allergens.

How is this accomplished? For example, large amounts of wheat and cereal-based carbohydrates are decreased in favor of non-gluten sugars such as sweet potatoes and yams, healthy whole grains like quinoa, amaranth, and millet, and inflammation-fighting, fiber-based carbohydrate sources like chickpeas and lentils. Healthy fats such as nuts, seeds, avocadoes, fish, and olive oil are also included to provide dense, long-lasting energy sources.

Lean protein needs are often satisfied by the foods listed above, but in this book, protein sources also include amino acid supplements, rice milk, almond milk, goat protein or goat milk, and, if tolerated, eggs, beef, lamb and lean dairy.

There are even many spices and herbs such as turmeric, ginger and chilies which can help fight inflammation. Meanwhile, packaged and processed and ldquo;fake and rdquo; foods such as energy bars and gels are limited to longer training sessions, during which carrying real food can be logistically challenging. These are just a few of the considerations and solutions laid out in the pages of this book for the health-conscious triathlete.

After reading and ldquo;Holistic Fueling For Ironman Triathletes and rdquo;, you and rsquo;re going to know exactly how to develop a healthy meal plan that includes anti-inflammatory foods and nutrition supplements, how to avoid common traps while grocery shopping, and how to balance ratios of protein, carbohydrate and fat with training. You and rsquo;re going to be supplied with a and ldquo;no-guesswork and rdquo; nutrition plan that you can simply plug into your existing training routine.

But perhaps most importantly, you and rsquo;re going to be empowered with the knowledge of why you and rsquo;re eating what you and rsquo;re eating!

Whether this is your first or tenth Ironman, whether this is your off-season, your preparatory phase or your build to a race, or whether you feel like you eat healthy but still have physical problems, now is the time to ensure that your diet is clean, healthy and conducive to ideal physical performance.

You and rsquo;re going to be very surprised when you adopt the fueling system in this book and your body suddenly functions properly. When your cells are and ldquo;firing on all cylinders and rdquo;, it is really a magical feeling, especially during a long day like Ironman. This book holds the key to ensuring that you cross the finish line with a smile on your face, knowing that you and rsquo;ve cared for your body and that you and rsquo;ve done no damage with your high daily caloric intake."

Enjoy the feeling!

The State of Sustainable Sport

http://www.mindsettriathlon.com/product_info.php?products_id=1200

Publisher: Council For Responsible Sport
The Council for Responsible Sport was formed in September of 2007 to develop an independent, comprehensive certification for sustainable athletic events. By defining realistic objectives and providing a framework for achieving them, the Council enables event directors to incorporate environmental and social responsibility into their events while informing consumers which events adhere to these standards.

The Problem
Two fundamental issues exist in the way sporting events are currently produced. The first is that they are inherently wasteful and ndash; a pastime activity practiced by large numbers of people has the potential for leaving behind a considerable footprint. Second, no significant incentives exist to encourage event producers to minimize this impact. Consider the 2007 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii as an example. The race attracted 1,787 participants from across the globe and ndash; only 68 were from the state of Hawaii and ndash; who traveled a combined 18,312,992 miles to the event. This translates into the equivalent of 10,853 metric tons of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere and ndash; the same amount produced by powering and heating 972 average American homes for one year.

The Solution
A growing number of sporting events are taking steps to mitigate these harmful environmental effects. The Council for Responsible Sport legitimizes these efforts and creates an environment where market forces (i.e. consumer demand) can produce tangible incentive for event directors. The mechanism for identifying responsibly-produced events is a public certification based on known best practices.

Throughout 2008, the Council for Responsible Sport conducted a pilot study to assess the state of sporting event production in terms of environmental and social sustainability. This paper summarizes the findings of this study, including individual case studies of each participating event. The knowledge gained from the pilot program shape the Council and rsquo;s certification process and criteria for 2009, which will be open to all interested mass participation sporting events.

Major findings of the pilot study include:

and bull; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp; The sporting event industry has a need for the verification of and ldquo;green and rdquo; marketing claims.
and bull; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;Creative, realistic, environmentally-minded solutions exist for common event production tasks.
and bull; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;Incorporating environmental and social considerations into an event does not necessarily translate into steeper production costs.
and bull; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;A number of events across the country are making significant strides toward and ldquo;zero waste and rdquo; and carbon neutrality.
and bull; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp; There is a willingness by participants to accept environmentally-friendly alternatives to traditional materials, products, and methods.
and bull; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;Responsible event production opportunities exist regardless of event size or geographic location.
and bull; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp; With proper planning, producing a new event responsibly can be just as easy as greening an existing event.

ReSport Certification Standard
Modeled off the LEED standards administered by the US Green Building Council, standards set forth by the Council for Responsible Sport reward events undertaking initiatives in five different categories of environmental and social sustainability. Specific, measurable credits can be earned in areas of waste, climate, equipment and materials, community and outreach, and health promotion. In addition to providing incentive, the ReSport Standards also serve as a roadmap for events interested in developing a long-term sustainability strategy.

Best Practices
A comprehensive evaluation of participating pilot program events exposed a set of best practices for furthering the tenets of responsible production. Events were far more likely to reach their sustainability goals if they effectively engaged participants, integrated their chosen green initiatives into multiple facets of the event production process, exercised creativity, and identified ways that responsible event production could legitimately reduce their bottom line.

As a result of implementing these practices, events in the ReSport Pilot Program:

and bull; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;offset 598 metric tons of generated CO2, equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 15,332 tree seedlings grown for 10 years;
and bull; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;directly engaged 35,960 participants with a message of environmental and social responsibility; and
and bull; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;minimized landfill waste to levels below 1 pound per participant.
o and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;Marin County Triathlon generated 0.07 lbs/participant
o and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;Keuka Lake Triathlon generated 0.34 lbs/participant
o and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;ING Hartford Marathon generated 0.41 lbs/participant
o and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;Urban Epic generated 0.42 lbs/participant

Moving Forward
Sporting events are just beginning to lessen their environmental footprint. But the potential for adopted practices to effect widespread, societal change is vast and ndash; sport has the unique ability to incite passion, reach across social and economic classes, and affect behaviors in both those who participate and those who watch from the sidelines.

Certification is a mechanism for promoting less harmful methods and materials. By identifying responsibly-produced events through a common set of standards, marketplace differentiation can occur and consumers can exercise choice.
Publisher: Triboomer.com

This anthology of 15 essays, written by every day triathletes, is about humans doing what they were meant to do. In these pages, you and rsquo;ll read why these triathletes love their sport. They are the men and women you meet every day. Some of the authors have regular jobs and some are retired. Some of them are barely out of school and some are grandparents. They are the fast one and they are the not-so-fast one but they all compete from start to finish just the same. You and rsquo;ll read stories of triumph and defeat, of finding oneself and leaving one and rsquo;s old self behind. They write about meeting new love on the course and leaving love-gone-wrong in the dust. For these athletes, triathlon is more than a sport, its a way of life. And, that and rsquo;s the way it should be.

During a race and in training, triathletes live more in one day than most have lived in decades. They pursue their perfect race. Although they may not find perfection it is in the pursuit that they find excellence. Theirs is a healthy pursuit with a promising reward of good health allowing them to do it longer. What they have learned in the sport is through their own self-examination. Triathlon and rsquo;s essence is endurance. Its lessons are taught not in seconds or in the swing of a club or a kick of a ball. This sport, because of its essence, exposes weaknesses, tests will, and expels demons as well as sweat. It teaches patience, perseverance, and pain tolerance. It reveals courage in the most honorable of methods: By testing the faith in yourself. Because without faith under fire, true courage is confined.

What these athletes write about is their calling to be what they were meant to be: A body in motion with their souls exposed in this, the worlds toughest sport.

It all started with a simple every day movement. OK, maybe not all that simple. I bent down to move my couch.

Perhaps I should have asked for help. The best way I can describe the feeling that I experienced as I attempted to hoist the couch to a separate corner of my living room is red hot searing lower back pain that radiated all around my hips, upper thighs and butt.

I hate that feeling. As an avid triathlete, endurance runner, swimmer and cyclist, I automatically know that despite common low back treatements, I could be laid up for days, maybe even weeks.

And the worst part is that when I return to training after such a back injury, I know that I will have a nagging, debilitating ache in my low back or hips that makes every foot strike, every pedal stroke, and every push of the wall just a little more painful and slow.

Damn couch.

Have you ever had this happen? Not only does a stupid injury like this completely eliminate your potential for physical activity in the sports that you love, but to make matters worse, you wake up stiff for weeks, it takes forever to "warm-up" sufficiently for the low back pain to subside, then you risk stepping wrong during a run or mis-shifting your weight in the saddle during a bike and starting the long, nasty cycle all over again!

For the past decade that I and rsquo;ve spent as an endurance athlete coach, dozens of my cyclists and runners have experienced this very same debilitating low back pain that limits power production on the bicycle and stride length or push-off while running. Sometimes the origin of pain is slightly mysterious, and sometimes cannot not be traced back to a single episode of acute injury. And sometimes the pain was a result of a single injury, such as straining the back while moving a heavy piece of furniture.

Like that freaking couch. The pain after this injury never seems to completely disappear, at least not until after I discovered some important secrets about fixing low back pain.

But I'll get to those later. First, let me be a little more specific about how this injury actually manifests itself...

The best way I can describe the lower back pain is a slightly radiating discomfort, typically located on just one side. It isn't so bad that you can't do anything. It is just annoying and it slows you down. When cycling and running or performing other repetitive motion sports, you usually experience a feeling of weakness and nerve tingling on the outside of the knee, only on one side or the other.

The best way I can describe the pain is a slightly radiating discomfort, typically located on one side. It isn't so bad that you can't do anything. It is just annoying and it slows you down. When cycling and running, you usually experience a feeling of weakness and nerve tingling on the outside of the knee, only on one side or the other.

As I struggled through weeks of pain, I personally started to keep a LIST of when the symptoms actually presented themselves. The pain and slight weakness or tingling tended to manifest most significantly during the following situations:

Fortunately, certain activities always seemed to slightly relieve the pain (although occasionally they actually seemed to aggravate it). So I made a second LIST. These activities included:

Typically, myself and the athletes that I coach could actually make a popping sensation that came from the back when twisting from side to side or performed a lying rotational back stretch. Sometimes this temporarily alleviated the pain.

But I'm not personally a physician. So for many years, I simply coached my athletes through the pain, allowing them to manage the discomfort with chiropracty, acupuncture, massage, and a stiff upper lip. And I did the same. This just seemed to make sense, since it never seemed like there was a clear and concise way to manage or eliminate the pain.

It was frustrating! Have you ever wanted to go for a nice long swim without feeling back pain every time you push off the wall or reach too hard?

Have you ever wanted to be able to run on a hard surface for more than 2 miles without experiencing tightness, jarring, and eventually pure and simple low back or hip pain?

This type of discomfort severely affected my training and race performance.
Sacroiliac joint dysfunction....

Sciatica nerve....

Piriformis syndrome....

I learned that the sacroiliac joints are considered a source of most lower back pain, and compression of the pelvis or an asymmetry of the hips resulted in joint dysfunction and subsequent pain. Compression of the pelvis occurs in the seated position, and rotation of the hips occurs in both cycling and running, and both can be the cause of low back pain. An especially significant correlation is noted between low back pain and lack of internal hip rotation mobility.

The development of asymmetry in the hips and improper muscle lengths in the hip rotator muscles can be caused by frequently assumed postures, like sitting for long periods or time or being bent over on a bicycle for hours in the saddle.

This was important to know, and a key to the secret of eliminating the low back pain. Here's why:

Typically, these type of positions cause the lateral rotation muscles to shorten and the medial rotation muscles to lengthen, and often one side is affected more than the other. When the lateral rotation muscles shorten, the entire hip bone is pulled posteriorly towards the shortened side, thus causing nerve pain that originates from the sacroiliac joint and can even aggravate the sciatic nerve. This pain is aggravated even more during the powerful hip extension movement of cycling and running, during the high compressive spinal forces produced when seated, and during a seated cross-legged position, when the lateral rotation muscles on one side are shortened even further.

Voila! Now we're on to something!

I hunted down one very excellent resource that talked about this "Rotation", and I studied it from cover-to-cover. It was a book entitled "The Malalignment Syndrome", by Wolf Schamberger, and it not only confirmed much of the information I had already acquired, with a very thorough description of low back pain, biomechanical malalignment and improperly rotated hips. But the book was very large, over 450 pages, and I couldn and rsquo;t simply tell my athletes to read the book and figure out how to fix their problem. And I couldn and rsquo;t exactly tuck it under my arm and bring it to the gym every day.

But I read it.

Everything was coming together.

It was like a giant puzzle, and the pieces were finally creating a picture that I could understand...

Using everything that I learned from the great big book, I began to design and perfect a series of exercises and stretches to fix my low back pain.

It wasn't easy. Depending on which side of your hips are rotated, you have to adjust each exercise or stretch accordingly, and it took hours and hours of practice to actually figure out what actually worked.

But I kept at it.

Then I set about testing my own methods and theories. For 4 weeks, on at least four to five days of each week, I performed the exact routine that I invented. The routine that I designed was was gleaned from the most practical and immediately usable information in the big book, combined with all the tricks and tips from my research and discussions with medical professionals.

My little routine took about 15-20 minutes every morning, and I would simply do it after 5 minutes of light cardio to warm the muscles, like walking down the driveway, out to my mailbox and back.

Good news!

My low back pain began to disappear. My back quit popping. The weakness and tingling in the side of the leg while running and cycling slowly subsided. Suddenly I was starting to feel...NORMAL!

And it wasn't just "relief". I actually felt..."repaired".

So I began suggesting the routine to my athletes, prescribing for them the very same routine, with exact instructions on how to perform each stretch or exercise, and exact instructions to perform the routine every weekday for the next month, and even some videos that showed them how to do the exercises.

I was blown away by what happened next.

Within 1 month of doing this routine, every athlete had not only reduced or completely eliminated their low back pain, but the power meter on the bicycle and the lap splits on the run were suddenly showing PR and rsquo;s! The pain had disappeared and as some kind of strange and unexplicable bonus, all the athletes had gotten faster!

And better yet, rather than engaging in repeated chiropractic visits and weekly manual adjustments, these athletes were finding that their hips stayed in proper adjustment and the sacroiliac related joint dysfunction was eliminated.

This was definitely worth sharing.

So I took all the videos of the exercises and stretches and put them onto the internet.

Then, I wrote the exact step-by-step low back pain fixing routine into an easy-to-understand manual, and packed it into an instantly accessible electronic book entitled and ldquo;Run With No Pain and rdquo;...

And that's my story. "Run With No Pain" is the official, easy and practical step-by-step exercise routine for eliminating low back pain in athletes.

Hailed by the Wall Street Journal and featured twice in six months in cover stories in Runner's World magazine, FIRST's unique training philosophy makes running easier and more accessible, limits overtraining and burnout, and substantially cuts the risk of injury-while producing faster race times. The key feature is the "3 plus 2" program, which each week consists of:

* 3 quality runs, including track repeats, the tempo run, and the long run, which are designed to work together to improve endurance, lactate-threshold running pace, and leg speed
* 2 aerobic cross-training workouts, such as swimming, rowing, or pedaling a stationary bike, which are designed to improve endurance while helping to avoid burnout

With detailed training plans for 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon, plus tips for goal-setting, rest, recovery, injury rehab and prevention, strength training, and nutrition, this program will change the way runners think about and train for competitive races.

Amby Burfoot, Runner's World executive editor and Boston Marathon winner, calls the FIRST training program "the most detailed, well-organized, and scientific training program for runners that I have ever seen."

BILL PIERCE, a collegiate half-miler and experienced marathoner, is professor and chair of Furman's Health and Exercise Science Department.

SCOTT MURR, an experienced marathoner and 10-time Ironman Triathlon finisher, is director of Furman's Fitness Center and a lecturer in the Health and Exercise Science Department at Furman.
